Founded on 27 June 1925 on what is now the first island of the First Maksimir Lake, the Zagreb Zoo has grown and evolved over time. In recent years, it has been undergoing a complete transformation. Many say that for a centenarian, it’s remarkably lively, constantly striving for innovation and excellence. It all began with only three foxes and three owls on the first working day, and it was founded by Mijo pl. FIlipović, who was also a philatelist. Soon, the Zoo expanded and visitors could see numerous animals, including the first African lions and the legendary baboon Štefek. The iconic Lion’s Bridge was built in 1930, followed by a monkey pavilion a year later, which is also when the first elephant, Mysore, arrived. In the 1990s, the modernization and complete transformation of the Zoo began. It was marked by the construction of new enclosures, the replacement of iron fences with dry and water moats, the acquisition of new animal species and the introduction of new attractions for visitors. This progress led to membership in the renowned and influential European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) in 1997. Today, the Zagreb Zoo is a modern institution that actively protects endangered species and their habitats, educates visitors and the general public and carries out scientific research projects. With pride and a strong sense of responsibility, it cares for endangered fauna from almost every continent, just as it does for local urban biodiversity. Visitors can explore nearly 400 different species represented by thousands of individual animals every day of the year. Through numerous educational programs and events, they can learn details about the lives of animals and their roles within ecosystems. Every year, almost half a million nature enthusiasts from Croatia and abroad visit the Zoo. Its experts from various fields actively participate in the work of EAZA and lead specific activities, thereby contributing to the preservation of global biodiversity and the future of planet Earth.
