German Shepherd
In the world there are almost four hundred breeds of dogs whereof the German shepherd is the most spread. It was brought to our parts of the world about hundred years ago (according to some information, to Osijek) where a presentation of police dogs’ skills was held, among whom was also this dog, especially devoted to man.
The German shepherd is for many people the most favourite and the most intelligent dog, but there are also those who would say that it is a dangerous animal.
In our areas people named it wolf dog. That name was given to the dog by those who think that in its veins still the wolf’s blood flows.
To this dog protection the cynologist stand up, people who are well acquainted with its temper, nature, devotedness, generosity and many other virtues it possesses.
It originates from Germany, from its ancestors, excellent herding dogs. Since the dog is highly intelligent, sharp and faithful, it is ready to learn new skills every day and is often used by numerous organisations for fulfilling daily tasks.
We can find this dog in cities, helping disabled, blind and visually impaired persons, at border crossings helping to detect drug and arms smugglers,  in various police jobs - for which reason it is named also police dog - searching for disappeared and lost persons on occasion of various natural disasters and accidents; however, it is very gladly seen as a family member, in children’s company, helping them to grow through play into responsible persons of positive habits.
German shepherd is an excellent actor. Due to its beauty and its acting talent, standing next to his trainer, the dog was already in past century an inspiration to many movie directors. Well known German shepherds were actors like Rin Tin Tin, Rex… And as concerns our national movies many people remember the movie Vuk samotnjak (Lone Wolf) in which the dog named Hund played an important role.
Their beauty and their skill in finding various objects are today assessed at numerous dog exhibitions organised in Zagreb and other major Croatian towns.
Those with best achievement represent our country in European and international competitions. During past years German shepherds of Croatian breeding won on several occasions the title of the most successful in European as well as in international competition.
