May 22nd 1993 marks the first anniversary of Croatia being admitted into membership of the United Nations. This most important landmark for the Croatian people came after centuries of struggle for their survival on this soil and centuries of struggle for their cultural identity. Even the admittance to membership in the United Nations was preceded by a fierce struggle which claimed many Croat victims in 1991 in the brutal war waged against the Croatian people and its very existence by the hordes of the Yugoslav Army and Serb Chetniks. In their attempt to prevent the independence of Croatia, while at the same time working for the realization of the idea of a Greater Serbia on our soil, they initiated a brutal aggression on Croatia. Unarmed, the Croatian people created a new police force and an army which provided heroic resistance to the enemy, and through successful diplomacy achieved international recognition. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20. HPT issued a first day cover (FDC) and a commemorative sheet.
