By his patriotism, his determination by wich he accomplished his political convictions and by the enthusiasm which he also used to stimulate others, Jelačić became the symbol of the Croatian movement of the year 1848., and will remain in constant remembrance of the peasants owing to his proclamation by which he announced the abolition of serfdom.
In the series of postage stamps entitled GREAT MEN OF CROATIA, HPT issued a regular postage stamp bearing a portrait of the Croatian Ban (Viceroy) Josip Jelačić. Motif: Count Josip Jelačić (Petrovaradin 1801. - Zagreb 1859.) who was holding the office of Ban of Croatia from 1848. until 1859. In 1866. a statue was errected to his memory in the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, on the central square that has ever since gone by his name. The stamp was printed in sheets of 30 pieces each. The envelope of the first date of issue (FDC) was placed on sale by HPT too.
