The expression is the trademark of Šulentić's paintings, indicator of that eternally high fever that enables the painter to get "beyond the things", as he himself claims.
Motif: Šulentić's self-portrait (1929) The gift of Zlatko Šulentić (b. March 16, 1893 at Glina, died in 1971), became visible during his high-school years at Karlovac. His talent will profit from his first travels abroad with his father - a physician - who will be his favourite model for many years while those travels will mark the young Šulentić all his life. From whatever end we look at the thread in the wool-ball made of Šulentić's paintings - from the start or from the end - the ball keeps unwinding from the same constant: expression. As a matter of fact, from his early works created under the influence of Jugendstil (his so-called portrait expressionism), most of all under the influence of Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka (the Portrait of Dr. Stjepan Pelc, 1917) until his last landscapes with startling fiery coloring, and with a summary, free line (Sa Silbe, 1968, Veliki Rat, 1970), the expression is the trademark of Šulentić's paintings, indicator of that eternally high fever that enables the painter to get "beyond the things", as he himself claims. The 1950's and the 1960's were a period of his summer travels cycli (the Zadar, Vrbnik, Kvarner, Šipan Cycli). The continous "rise" of the colour scala revealed this "homeland painter" as the authentic representative of the movement of the "synthetic abstractionism" (Gliha, Šimunović) classifying him once more in the heights of the contemporary Croatian painting. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20 pieces each. HPT put on sale the commemorative envelope of the first day (FDC) and a commemorative sheet.
