Motif: The Split Theatre The building of the Split National theatre was completed one hundred years ago. The first-night of the first performance was 6 May, 1893 and the Zagreb Company, the oldest in Croatia, performed the historical drama "Teuta" by the Croatian dramatist D. Demeter. Thus the city of Split, and its Croatian actors gained a finely representative building which could serve as a basis for Croatian National Theatre in Dalmatia. Although we cannot say that the building of the theatre in 1893 laid the foundation stone for a Croatian National Theatre in Split, it was nevertheless, because of the guest performances of the Zagreb company, a historical event and a political victory for Croatian interests who demostrated the unbreakable cultural ties between the north and the south of Croatia. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20 pieces each. HPT issued First Day Cover and commemorative sheet, too.
