THE MAIN RAILROAD STATION HOUSE AT ZAGREB

On the occasion of the centennial of the Main Railroad Station House at Zagreb, HPT - Croatian Post and Telecommunications issued a commemorative postage stamp. Motif: The Main Railroad Station House at Zagreb. When the first railroad in Austria - Hungary (the Vienna - Trieste line) was completed, the inhabitants of Zagreb wanted to link Zagreb to that line via Zidani Most. The railroad construction from Sisak to Zagreb and Zidani Most began in 1861. The first train to run from Zidani Most to Zagreb operated on October 1, 1862, reaching the Southern Station (later renamed the Western Station). The 1890 Act of the Royal Hungarian Government authorised a special station with the maintenance shop to be built in Zagreb. The Station House with its neoclassicistic front was designed by the Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff, head of the Hungarian Railroads Civil Engineering Section. The sculptural works on the Station House were performed by the Hungarian Sculptor Vilim Marschenko. The Station House provided no Post Office, therefore the Post Office was errected in the same year. The state -owned Railroads gave special attention to the environmental matters. An agreement was made permitting a Botanical Garden to be established between the tracks and the Mihanović Str. of today. The new railroad station was opened on July 1, 1892. The stamp was printed in sheets of 25 pieces each. HPT put on sale the envelope of the first date of issue (FDC) and a commemorative sheet of stamps.
