125TH ANNIVERSARY OF HAZU

Motif: The portrait of Josip J. Strossmayer and the building of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. HAZU - Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts is the highest scientific and artistic establishment in the Republic of Croatia. Its main purpose is to organise the scientific research and artistic creative activities, and to promote national culture according to the needs of the Croatian people. In order to achieve its goals, Academy formed more then thirty different scientific establishments. It was begun 125 years ago. HAZU is the oldest Academy of the South Slavs. It was urged by the Đakovo Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1860) who gathered the initial assets for its activities and stayed its protector until his death. He also donated to the Academy his rich collection of paintings, therefore establishing the Gallery of Old Masters, which houses many priceless works, especially of the Italian and Dutch school. In modern times the activities of HAZU are organized into eigth sections encompassing all the activitiesin the field of sciences and arts. Its membership includes 220 members. The stamp was printed in sheets of 25 pieces each. HPT - Croatian Post and Telecommunications put on sale FDC and commemorative sheet of stamps.
