The Croatian historian Tadija Smičiklas was born on the 1st October 1843 in the village Reštovo in Žumberak. Tadija Smičiklas lived and worked in a period of Croatian history that was full of hardship, marked with Hungarian hegemony and dominance of Khuen Hedervary.
Motif: The portrait-scetch of Tadija Smičiklas The Croatian historian Tadija Smičiklas was born on the 1st October 1843 in the village Reštovo in Žumberak. He studied in Zagreb, Prague and Vienna and after graduating he worked as an assistant teacher in Osijek and later as a grammar school teacher in Zagreb and Rijeka. From 1882 till 1905 he was a full proffessor at the Faculty of Arts at Zagreb University. From 1883 he was a member of JAZU (The Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts) and from 1899 to his death on the 8th June 1914 he worked as the Academy Secretary. From 1889 he was also Secretary to Matrix Croatica (Croatian National publishing house). Tadija Smičiklas lived and worked in a period of Croatian history that was full of hardship and after the Croatian-Hungarian Agreement in 1868 it was marked with Hungarian hegemony and dominance of Khuen Hedervary. He had personal and political contacts with J. J. Strossmayer and F. Rački, Hedervary's opponents. He was also the deputy of the Independent Party in the Parliament. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20. HPT issued a first day cover (FDC) and a commemorative sheet.
