THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION AND THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PHILAD

Motif: A worker with a protection equipment and signs of warning against danger at work The International Labour Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It was created on May 11, 1919 as an independent body of the League of Nations and was the only international organization which remained active durnig the Second World War. The ILO obtained the status of the first specialized UN agency according to a separate agreement with the UN International Covenant on Economic and Social Rights. It was a kind of response to the UN concerns about social justice and standards of treatment of industrial workers, and may be seen as a precursor of systems for the protection of economic, social and cultural rights. The International Labour Organization consists of 150 members, the Republic of Croatia being one of its full members. The ILO has sponsored over 150 conventions dealing with conditions of work, remuneration, child and forced labour, the provision of holidays and social security, discrimination and trade union rights. The Philadelphia Declaration from 1944 reaffirmed the scopes of the ILO. The Declaration includes treaties on labour, freedom of expression and association; poverty is considered a major impediment to prosperity and should be fought on both national and international levels. The International Labour Organization has the institutions or mechanisms for insuring that these rights are observed. The bodies of the organization are the General Assembly, the Administrative Council and the International Labor Bureau. The General Assembly creates all international labour Covenants and gives recommendations on all the important issues which are a legitimate matter of its concern. The implementation of these covenants and regulations into the legal systems of the member states can be carried out after their ratification.
