The example of The Kolo Magazine (Croatian literary review issued with shorter breaks from 1842 up to now) proves that the well established, nationally important projects can survive in the adverse circumstances; furthermore, they established a standard of values and of deeply grounded needs that gave rise to them.
Motif: The Kolo Magazine was named after the chain dance of Croatia, the word Kolo, meaning "wheel, circle", in allusion to the reunion of the men of letters and culturists. The example of The Kolo Magazine (Croatian literary review issued with shorter breaks from 1842 up to now) proves that the well established, nationally important projects can survive in the adverse circumstances; furthermore, they established a standard of values and of deeply grounded needs that gave rise to them. The Kolo Magazine, begun largely through the efforts of the eminent participants of the Illyrian movement (Dragutin Rakovac, Stanko Vraz, Ljudevit Vukotinović were its publishers), backed by their own capital, bears the subtitle "The articles for literature, art, life of a nation". The Kolo Magazine changed its appearance during its long history, it changed the tempo of its publication, but has never lost its influence on the Croatian intellectual life and on literary public. That is why the magazine had come into conflict with the anti-Croatian regimes. The long period imposed several breaks in development, the frequency of publication varied, many a time The Kolo Magazine was temporarily suspended. The events of 1971 led to granting a temporary injunction banning further publication of The Kolo Magazine. Publication was resumed in 1991 when the democracy was restored. Never before has The Kolo Magazine been denied the opportunity to be published for such a long time. It was revived in 1991 proving by its fate that it defended - even in the recent time - not only the interests of the literature but of the idea of the Croatian sovereign state and of the national integrity, too. The stamp was printed in sheets of 25 pieces each. HPT put on sale the commemorative envelope of the first day of issue (FDC), and a commemorative sheet.
