The major figure in the development of skiing as well as of other sports in Croatia was Franjo Bučar who brought the first pair of skis to Zagreb in 1894 and thus enhanced the activity of the ski section within the first Croatian Ice Skating Association. Skiing was the sport put on the schedule of the course for gym teachers which was, from 1894 to 1896, held on Cmrok and the hill-sides of Medvednica. The ski section of the HAŠK sports club organized in 1914 the first Zagreb Ski Championship on Sljeme and later in the same year the first Croatian Championship in Mrkopalj. Skiers from Croatia took part in the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix in 1924, but without significant results. Today skiing is a fairly popular sport in Croatia, though the stagnation of professional skiing is greatly due to the lack of appropriate ski courses and better weather conditions. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20 pieces each. HPT issued a first day cover and a commemorative sheet.
