Croatian Parliament, Hrvatski sabor, is the embodiment of Croatia’s statehood. From assemblies held at the time of Croatian dukes and kings in the Early Middle Ages, giving rise to the Sabors of Slavonia and Croatia in the High Middle Ages, the parliaments of Croatian nobility and the first civic parliament in the 19th century to the modern times, the Sabor has been an institution that has endured even through the most difficult times. The role of the Sabor as the unremitting guardian of the statehood and independence of the Croatian people and state throughout history remains deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness of the Croatian people to this day. After almost 20 years, this year Croatia is again celebrating its Statehood Day on 30 May in memory of 30 May 1990, when the first democratically elected multiparty Sabor was constituted as the expression of the citizens’ will, proclaimed in the first free elections, and when the new national leadership was elected that led Croatia on the path of sovereignty and independence. All subsequent decisions and events in the historical 1990s arise from 30 May 1990. The “Christmas Constitution” promulgated by the Sabor on 22 December 1990 would not have been possible without the democratic multiparty Sabor as the highest representative body of Croatian citizens and the holder of legislative power in Croatia. Neither would the historical decisions from 25 June 1991, when the Sabor adopted the Constitutional Decision on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Croatia and the Declaration on the Establishment of an Independent and Sovereign Republic of Croatia. The decision to sever all state and legal ties with former Yugoslavia of 8 October 1991 would also not have been possible without the Sabor as the keeper of Croatian statehood. Countries across the world proudly celebrate landmark dates in their history that their identity and statehood are built upon. These are the moments engraved in the collective consciousness of the people and proudly passed on to new generations to build awareness of their glorious past and a brave outlook on their future. The thirtieth of May is exactly such a date in Croatian history, and the Croatian Post joins the formal celebration of Republic of Croatia’s 30th Statehood Day by issuing a commemorative postage stamp. Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia
